In my years of experience as a project manager and project director I found that managing the project team can be both challenging and fun. Today I would like to share the tips on how to best manage your team to deliver a successful project.
Based on my experience, managing a project team is no different from managing any other team. As a project manager we need to practice everything that a good leader practice. Several key things we need to keep on emphasizing to the team (not only by words, but also by deeds) are that we care about each member of our team and that we will do everything we can in our capacity to help them succeed in delivering the project.
Another key thing is that we need to make sure that the team is well motivated throughout the project. Depending on project situation and our leadership style, regular one-on-one sessions with the team, team bonding activities, training, and coaching will help the team to move on at the pace we set.
In some occassions we might need to give the team a break with their families or to do their own personal activities. In this case, we need to make sure that other team members are well equipped to temporarily replace the on-vacation team members.
While reward and punishment is no longer popular nowadays, praising the team members for their achievements and celebrating smaller wins upon completion of a milestone is also very important, particularly for a long-duration or high-pressure project.
